Mikayla graduated from the Baylor University Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program in May 2025 and is currently attending medical school.
Why did you choose to pursue the MSMS program at Baylor?
I chose to pursue the MSMS degree at Baylor University to strengthen my foundation and confidence. I believe a large part of the journey to medicine is knowing you are capable. The MSM program was very rigorous and the curriculum heavily mirrored what I felt I would experience in medical school. The program challenged me to the best way possible, enhancing my ability to think critically and apply knowledge to real world scenarios.
Please share one of the highlights of your experience in the MSMS program.
A highlight of the MSMS program is the curriculum. While intimidating at first glance, it covers a breadth of information and ultimately provides a strong foundation in the biomedical sciences. The pace and depth of the material challenged me to refine my study strategies, strengthen my time management, and truly understand concepts rather than rely on memorization.
What is one way that your Baylor MSMS education prepared you for your next step?
One way my MSMS education prepared me for the next step is by strengthening my ability to manage a rigorous academic workload similar to that of medical school. I learned to reflect deeply on my abilities and find gaps in my knowledge. The intensity of the curriculum required me to develop disciplined study habits, improve my time management, and stay consistent even during demanding periods.
What would you say to a prospective student considering the Baylor MSMS degree program?
To a prospective student considering the MSMS program, I would say: embrace the challenge. There will be difficult moments throughout the program, but it’s important to push through and stay focused on becoming the best student you can be. Lean on faculty and peers when needed; they are invaluable sources of support and guidance. Remember the reason you started the program, and let that motivation carry you through the tough times. Stay disciplined, trust the process, and be kind to yourself throughout the journey.
What did it look like to build community and engage with your fellow students in this online program?
Building community with peers in the program was essential to my success and became truly meaningful. My cohort relied heavily on group chats and virtual study sessions to stay connected. Collaboration with peers greatly helped my understanding of material and made the coursework feel a little less daunting. Building community took intentional effort as it was easy to remain isolated due to distance, but once you put yourself out there you won't regret it.
How did your experience with the Baylor faculty enhance your educational experience?
My experience with the faculty at Baylor University greatly enhanced my educational experience. All of the faculty were incredibly supportive and made learning feel more manageable, even with the abundance of information. They were accessible and always willing to clarify complex concepts, often breaking down difficult material in a way that made it easier to understand.
