M.S. in Medical Science Course Descriptions

Biostatistics (MSMS 5300)

This course teaches the critical thinking skills needed to read, understand, and interpret statistical methods used in medical field studies and publications. It examines various statistical procedures focusing on interpretation, as well as recognizing and avoiding common fallacies so as to draw valid conclusion

Cardiopulmonary Physiology (MSMS 5440)

This course is designed to provide an understanding of Cardiopulmonary Anatomy and Physiology. Lectures and homework assignments are designed to provide the student with a working knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology that are deemed necessary in a clinical environment.

Intro to Clinical Research & Evidence-Based Decision Making (MSMS 5201)

An introduction to clinical research methods and evidence-based decision making as it relates to medical sciences. A variety of methods and tools are examined to determine the effects of interventions that can be used to inform healthcare practice.

Medical Ethics from a Christian Perspective (MSMS 5250)

This course explores major ethical issues confronting the practices of medicine by viewing ethical dilemmas through virtue ethics, principles of biomedical ethics, and Christian lenses.

Advanced Human Anatomy (MSMS 5500)

An overview of gross anatomy of human tissues, major organs and the central nervous system for graduate students in the Master of Science in Medical Science program. Online lectures and discussion are supplemented with video demonstrations with cadaveric specimens.

Pathophysiology (BIO 5220)

Provides a framework for applying fundamental principles of human anatomy and physiology to the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Principles of Biochemistry (CHE 5380)

Foundational principles of molecular structure and function are followed by in-depth study of biomolecules, enzymatic processes, and metabolic pathways.

Pharmacology (MSMS 5350)

This course is designed to help students focus on the basic principles of pharmacology and therapeutics in the context of medicine and biomedical science. Topics include the types and nomenclature of small molecule drugs and therapeutic biologics, drug-receptor interactions, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics and the basis of personalized medicine.

Intro to Physical Exam Skills & Patient Communication (MSMS 5202)

This course consists of a variety of introductory physical examination techniques and patient communication skills topics and assignments designed to help students develop their kinesthetic and verbal and nonverbal communication abilities for their clinical future with patients, and in preparation for their career interests among the medical sciences.

Health Industry & Health Disparities in the United States (MSMS 5260)

Topics related to the U.S. healthcare industry including known health disparities, atypical business model due to the “third-party” payer system dominated by professionals with extensive postgraduate training, not for profit goals that are not purely market oriented, difficult to measure outcomes of quality, cost, and access for all health consumers, in one of the most governmentally regulated industries in America.

Microbiology & Immunology (BIO 5432)

The primary aim of this course is to aid MSMS students in concentrating on the fundamental concepts of immunology and microbiology pertaining to medicine and biomedical science. he topic of microbiology consists of the classification of microorganisms, microbial transmission, and viral multiplication.

Seminar: Prof Development (MSMS 5100)

Course activities improve leadership and communication skills, medical program acceptance rate, and medical industry marketability, identify career interest, and focus job search efforts.
