Clinical Education

The Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program is focused on providing students real-time patient care using contemporary treatment approaches. Faculty meet with students to identify career goals that will shape clinical placements while also meeting accreditation standards. Students begin clinical experiences during the preseason of the first fall semester. During five semesters, students are assigned to a variety of sports, preceptors, clinical sites, and patient populations.

Clinical Sites

Students will be assigned to a minimum of six clinical sites in the central Texas area during the program. Clinical rotations are designed to provide students with opportunities to apply classroom learning in real world settings. These experiences are designed to provide students increasing learning opportunities as the progress through coursework. Clinical sites used by the MAT program include:

  • Ascension
  • Baylor University
  • Belton Independent School District
  • China Springs Independent School District
  • Methodist Children’s Home
  • Midway Independent School District
  • Robinson Independent School District
  • Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopedics
  • University of Mary-Hardin Baylor
  • Waco Family Health Center

Distance Immersions

Distance immersions offer students the opportunity to be immersed into daily patient care in a selected setting. Students can choose a setting anywhere in the United States. Immersions allow students to learn clinical skills from athletic trainers working in various settings. Immersions are completed during the second summer or fall in the program. To date, students have completed internships with:

  • Allen Independent School District
  • FC Dallas
  • Houston Texans
  • Los Angeles Rams
  • McKinney Independent School District
  • North Carolina Courage
  • Philadelphia Phillies
  • University of Houston
  • University of North Texas
  • The University of Alabama
  • San Diego State University
  • San Antonio Fire Department
  • Stanford University
