Q&A with Lucy Lunsford, Baylor MSMS Alumnus
Status message
Lucy graduated from the Baylor University Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program in August 2025 and is currently attending Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Why did you choose to pursue the MSMS program at Baylor?
I chose to pursue this degree with Baylor University because I wanted to give myself the best foundation to grow from for professional schools. I had a difficult personal situation happen to me during undergrad that affected my academics and hurt my confidence when it came to applying to professional schools. This program was a way to give me that academic and personal confidence back!
Please share one of the highlights of your experience in the MSMS program.
One highlight would be completing the ethics final project with my cohort. I thought it was so fun to explore an ethical situation with other students and analyze it together to determine what the next steps would be in the case. I feel like this mirrored a real-world interdisciplinary team meeting that would be seen when discussing real patients.
What is one way that your Baylor MSMS education prepared you for your next step?
It gave me a better anatomical and biochemical understanding of the body, which in turn will serve me well as I add to that knowledge. It also allowed me the opportunity to adjust my study habits and set reasonable goals for assignments. Lastly, the program's staff provided helpful tips and guidance throughout the journey that will be invaluable as I begin medical school this summer!
What would you say to a prospective student considering the Baylor MSMS degree program?
I would highly encourage them to pursue this degree if they are unsure if they are ready for professional school or if they feel like they want an even better foundation from which they can grow. The faculty and staff are all supportive and will do their best to get you where you need to go, so all you need to do is decide where that is! I truly don't think anyone would regret this degree for the depth of knowledge and passion the instructors show towards their subjects and their students.
What did it look like to build community and engage with your fellow students in this online program?
We had so many GroupMe chats, email chains, and discussion posts that allowed us to connect with each other. There are so many life-long friendships that spawned from this program, and I know there will be many more. As long as people reach out and engage with each other, it feels less like a mandatory attendance to a class and more like a long-distance meeting with your buddies!
How did your experience with the Baylor faculty enhance your educational experience?
The Baylor faculty enhanced my learning experience by being accessible and passionate about their subjects. Each member of the faculty could link what they were teaching to real-world examples and encouraged their students to seek out as much information as they can. I think this is the best way faculty can approach teaching and that it did wonders for how I seek out information in the world now.
