Q&A with Arsalan Hojabri, Baylor MSMS Alumnus
Arsalan graduated from the Baylor University Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program in May 2025 and has been accepted into medical school.
Why did you choose to pursue the MSMS program at Baylor?
I chose to pursue a Master of Science in Medical Science degree at Baylor University as the next step in my pursuit towards becoming a doctor. I wanted to show medical schools that I could excel in rigorous high level science courses. The courses that Baylor's MSMS offered, along with the mentorship from faculty with backgrounds in medicine, contributed to my growth as a student, and more importantly, as a man.
Please share one of the highlights of your experience in the MSMS program.
The highlight of my MSMS experience was the graduation dinner. It served as an opportunity to reflect on how much was achieved by joining the MSMS in just one year. Furthermore, the opportunity to get together with classmates and professors of mine that I had grown so close to while meeting online was a priceless experience.
What is one way that your Baylor MSMS education prepared you for your next step?
The Baylor MSMS program prepared me for my next step in medical school by challenging the limits of my academic performance. The rigors of the program helped me develop a strong work ethic that I will lean on when beginning medical school courses.
What would you say to a prospective student considering the Baylor MSMS degree program?
I would tell them to first consider what their long term goals are. After taking a moment to reflect on that, I would tell them that whatever those goals are, the Baylor MSMS program is the best place to work to achieve them. The program is filled with faculty and students who are genuine individuals that will in some shape or form become pivotal members in your journey to medical, dental, or any other professional schooling you may be pursuing.
What did it look like to build community and engage with your fellow students in this online program?
Building community with my fellow students during the program was organic and seamless. Very easily, I became close friends with my cohort members and even those in cohorts before and after me. I think that this sense of community even in an online program was possible for two reasons. First, the program directors are intentional about the quality and personality of the individuals they bring into the program, both faculty and students. Second, the structure of the courses in both the synchronous and asynchronous work helped students to connect in many different ways.
How did your experience with the Baylor faculty enhance your educational experience?
My experience with the Baylor faculty helped me fall in love with education again. After an undergraduate experience augmented by the COVID-19 pandemic, I had lost sight of the inspiration that can emerge from meaningful faculty–student relationships. Through my interactions with the Baylor MSMS faculty, I rediscovered a passion for knowledge and innovation, inspired by mentors who are genuinely enthusiastic about their scientific fields.
