Direct Primary Care Immersion
Through the Health Science Studies Signature Direct Primary Care (DPC) Immersion Experience, students have the opportunity to earn course credit for HP 4V79: Internship.
During the Immersion Experience, junior and senior interns will have the opportunity to work directly with Trevin Rube, APRN, FNP-C in his small membership-based clinic to learn about all aspects of the business and direct patient care. Interns have the opportunity to assist with administrative tasks, learn about drawing and submitting lab work, and observing patient interactions centered around understanding the patient as a whole.

Mr. Trevin Rube is a local Nurse Practitioner who owns his own DPC Practice. Mr. Rube is a graduate of Baylor University’s Exercise Physiology program. He has spent most of his professional career in emergency rooms and has now established a DPC practice with a vision of practicing wholistic patient care and offering membership-based services for individuals and families who lack access to large-employer-funded health insurance programs.
Research Simulation Program Goals
- Assist with clinic administrative tasks, including scheduling
- Learn about alternative funding models for services
- Observe patient interactions and treatment with a wholistic focus
- Become familiar with processes for taking lab work
- Understand processes and documentation for requesting outside lab analysis
- Learn about the functioning of direct primary care as an independent business
- Engage with patient education
Outcomes
Students will have the opportunity to direct their experience based on their skills and professional interests while having access to learning all aspects of the practice. They will improve their understanding of business and administrative skills, diagnostic labs and assessments, and have the opportunity to experience unique wholistic patient interactions.
Students who complete this experience will ultimately have a better understanding of healthcare models and the overall business of patient care.

Additional Details:
- By submitting an application for this competitive HSS experience, the applicant acknowledges the program requirement of 150 supervised clock hours with HOT DPC.
- Applications will be shared with our DPC partner who may conduct interviews to select the best applicants.
- Students selected to participate in this program will be notified of their acceptance via email.
- If selected, the applicant will complete an internship application in Canvas: HHPR Internship Preparation.
