Border Medicine Immersion

Through the Health Science Studies Signature Border Medicine Immersion Experience, students have the opportunity to earn course credit for HP 4V79: Internship.

During the Immersion Experience, junior and senior interns will learn about border medicine and conducting community health research, as well as have the opportunity to shadow/observe clinicians in Eagle Pass, Texas. This unique internship experience blends (1) advocacy for public health with (2) clinical observation.

Elias Diaz
LMFT Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) - Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center (FDRMC)

Elias Diaz is a mental health clinician who also serves as the compliance officer for the Maverick County Hospital District.


Program Goals

  • Explore healthcare administration
  • Engage with the border community
  • Shadow/observe clinicians in primary care and surgery
  • Shadow/observe clinicians in urology and oncology
  • Shadow/observe clinicians in podiatry
  • Discover public health advocacy
  • Understand research methodology
  • Conduct community needs assessments
  • Experience Eagle Pass City Council Board Meetings concerning the Maverick County Hospital District*

Outcomes

Border Medicine Immersion interns will assimilate into MCHD and FDRMC to understand healthcare in a border community.

The primary objective is to blend healthcare administration, community health, and clinical shadowing for a robust experience for pre-health interns. Through the vision and guidance of Mr. Diaz, interns will use research methods to determine gaps in healthcare, and barriers to attaining healthcare, in order to improve outcomes in human flourishing in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Additional Details:
  • By submitting an application for this competitive HSS experience, the applicant acknowledges the program requirement of 150 supervised clock hours in residence in Eagle Pass, Texas.
  • Students selected to participate in this program will be notified of their acceptance via email.
  • If selected, the applicant will complete an internship application in Canvas: HHPR Internship Preparation.
  • If selected, the applicant will be responsible for transportation to and around Eagle Pass. (NOTE: A 2Br/1Ba apartment has been arranged, and we have received funding to cover the cost of housing.)
